IT components of all kinds require a stable and smooth power supply, but a wide variety of factors can affect the power quality at the rack and thus also the efficient power supply of the connected devices. Poor or insufficient power quality results in higher energy consumption, possible overheating or even unnecessary outages caused by damaged IT components which then causes availability to be restricted and operating costs to rise significantly overall.
Are you aware of and do you monitor the required power quality in the data center automatically, 24/7, directly at the rack?
There are various options to monitor the relevant energy quality parameters, but all non-automated variants only provide a temporary insight and are associated with personnel and time expenditure as well as additional costs due to manual operations. Only with permanent real-time monitoring of the relevant parameters both at the input and at the output with the connected IT systems, is it possible to detect and solve problems at an early stage.

Targeted monitoring of relevant quality metrics of the power supply at the PDU rack input, at any circuit breakers and, if possible, directly at the output of the rack PDUs enables faster identification of problems with individual alarms and, if necessary, active intervention and makes a significant contribution to more efficient operation. An additional waveform recording at the input and output for corresponding events also helps to identify the causes.
Do you know the free power capacities in your IT rack?
The configuration of racks in data centers is changed from time to time, for example to add new servers or replace older IT systems with more powerful equipment. For all changes, it is necessary to be aware of the free power capacities in your rack, both the current values at the time of installation as well as the extreme values, e.g. at peak load times, in order to prevent an overload and thus maintain the stability of your IT. By recording the maximum and minimum values of the energy consumption in the rack, you can better estimate the energy requirements and free capacities for future expansions and avoid problems.
